4 Months since accident

Well it has been 4 months since my accident I have been able to start range of motion physical therapy on the knee about a month ago and just last week the doctor gave me the okay to start putting weight on my leg. It has been 4 months since my leg has had weight on it. It felt very weird there isn't too much pain just have to retrain my leg to work again. It is kind of weird to have to concentrate so hard on making my leg function. But hopefully with time and a lot of hard work it will continue to get better. I also had the Wound VAC removed about a week and a half ago the wound is still healing but is so much smaller than what it was when we first started. Wound VACs are amazing and I am so very thankful for modern medical technology. I am also so very thankful for the many prayers that have been said in my behalf. I thank my Heavenly Father everyday for my wonderful family and great friends and for the many blessings that he has blessed me with!! Those that say miracles do not exist anymore I beg to differ, because I have been the recipient of miracle after miracle over the last 4 months!

POCATELLO — Andrea Hatch’s right leg was badly injured in an accident on July 2 when the motorcycle she was riding was hit by a car on Yellowstone Avenue in Chubbuck.
Just last week, her doctor at the University of Utah Medical Center told the 32-year-old medical assistant that he is becoming optimistic that she may not lose the leg.
“It’s always in the back of my mind,” Hatch said of the possibility she could still lose her leg. “If I even get an infection, I could still lose my leg.”
An athlete as a youth, who played basketball and volleyball at North Gem High School, and an avid runner in recent years, Hatch is hoping her recovery will one day allow her to enjoy those activities again. But she says if all she gets back is enough strength and stability to walk on the leg again, she will be happy with that.
“I can’t wait for the day I can walk again,” she said.

Well today marks the 11th week since my accident!! I can't believe it has been 11 weeks, somedays it feels longer than that and other days it feels like it was just yesterday. I am still healing, I still have the wound vac on and it is healing the wound right up. I take a picture of the wound everytime the nurse comes to change the dressing I have to keep looking at the previous pictures to remind myself how much it has healed because it seems so very slow but it has only been 3 weeks since we started the wound vac and it is already looking a tons better. I am so very thankful for modern medicine and the amazing technologies that are out there. I am so anxious to get back to work and to get back to living at my house I miss my friends at work and I never thought that I would say that I miss work but I miss it tremendously. I will never take for granted the ability to work and to take care of myself. I thank my Heavenly Father everyday for the many blessings that he has provided me with and for protecting me 11 weeks ago. I am so very thankful for the first responders that cared for me on that day 11 weeks ago and for all the ER and hospital staff that cared for me at Portneuf Medical Center and then for those that cared for me at the University of Utah hospital. They are all heroes in my book!!
I go back to Salt Lake this Thursday for a follow up appointment with the orthopaedic surgeon I am hoping for good news and ready to move on to the next step in my recovery process. I am also hoping that he will maybe give me a possible date of when I can return to work then I will have something to look forward to!!

X-rays of my leg!
This is the femur fracture it was a compound fracture which means the bone did poke thru the skin.

The knee before surgery. On the left it shows the knee cap which is not suppose to be that high the tendon that attaches it to the lower leg was detached which caused it to move up into my thigh a little ways.

The knee after surgery they used two plates and a bunch of screws to put me back together! The little tiny specs on the right side of my knee are the staples that they hadn't taken out yet.

And last but not least the two screws in my ankle.

Pictures from my 2 week post hospital follow up appointment at the U of U Orthopaedic Clinic on 7/26/2012.
Taking off all the bandages!

I got to see my leg for the first time I had not seen it in the hospital cause it was always wrapped up and I actually was a little scared to see what it looked like!

It took two nurses and the doctor to get out all the staples and stitches there were close to 100 staples and about 15 to 20 stitches.
Tag team staple removers!!

Pictures from the U of U on mom's camera.

First day after the ex fix was put on.

Her phone became her life line to the outside world.

We came up with a name for the external fixator.
Rod-Knee
This brought her a lot of relief as it brought the lower leg back down 2 inches to its normal length.
It took some getting used to.  To think those pins sticking out of the top went right into the bone.
They would move her leg around by holding on to the rod.
Hard to watch at times.

This bed was amazing.  It had a lot of buttons, I got pretty good at, well at least a lot of practice putting the bed in just the right position to bring her some comfort for a while.
It was magical in that they could make it shorter, drop the feet, raise the head and she was in a sitting position.  From here they would stand her up.  The first time was a little intense.
Because she was so strong she was able to use the trapeze bar, this was a blessing.
We were grateful for the nurse who suggested it and got it on her bed.

Happy Birthday Andrea

More pictures of the staff singing to Andrea.

This made her day.

One of the nurses even sang to her in a different langauge.

Some more pictures from my stay at U of U hospital.

I was a very lucky girl and got to celebrate my 32nd birthday in the hospital. The nurses brought me a cake and then a bunch of them came and sang Happy Birthday to me it was so very nice of them. People kept saying how sorry they were that I had to spend my birthday in the hospital but I told them I was just happy and thankful to still be here to celebrate another birthday!!

Me eating my birthday cake with milk on it I know us Hatchs are kind of crazy that way we like to put milk on our cake. Mmmmmm Yummy!! Only problem with the cake is that it wasn't chocolate but it was still very delicious!!

Yummy Cake!!

Pictures of University of Utah Hospital Stay

Here is some more pictures from the University of Utah hospital I am slow getting these pictures on here cause I have been trying to get them off of my phone. Got to love technology!!

This is how I spent my July 4th in surgery to get the external fixature placed and to stretch my leg back out 2 inches. We named the external fixature "RodKnee".

This was my July 4th view out over the Salt Lake Valley watching all the fireworks I was so lucky to get out of ICU and transferred to this room on the 6th floor with the biggest windows and best view!!

First attempt at getting out of bed to stand up!!! They would lift my leg or hold onto my leg by using the external fixature it really didn't hurt but it looked really weird and kind of felt weird!!!

Getting warmed up Ready Set GOOOOO!!!!!

And I made it!! I stood long enough for them to hurry and change the bed sheet which was a whole 30 seconds I think!!

Me holding my new little nephew he was only about a week and half old when I was in the accident so I haven't got to hold and spoil him as much as I would like to!! He is my next door neighbor so I was planning on spoiling him and being his favorite Aunt! I still will, but he will just have to wait a little bit longer for me to come home!!!

July 10th this is after the last and final surgery which was to put the knee back together and to close up the major wound that is on the inside of my leg!! I am hoping that is the last surgery for a very long time! The doctor told me that I will probably most likely have a knee replacement in my future! But until then I am game for no more surgery!! :)

My first wheelchair ride!! We went for a big ride around the U of U hospital!!

Me and my super"woman" shirt!!!

Pictures of the Accident

Here are a few pictures of the accident.  We feel that Andrea was being watched over that day.
She was thrown 15 feet landing on her left side.
We are so thankful she was wearing her helmet.

This part of the bumper is what cut her knee open and left a large wound besides shattering the bones and a compound fracture of the femur.

Ok, can you find her shoe in this picture.      Need a hint the shoe is black and white checkered.  Maybe it is a good thing her shoe came off not leaving her pinned between the bike and the bumper.
We may never know for sure.  But we know that she was being watched over that day.  She has no memory of the accident.  We are very grateful for those who were first on the scene and gave her comfort and care until help arrived.
